Is The Career Of Trauma Surgeon Right For You?
Trauma surgeon roles are exceptionally demanding, and are very difficult to obtain. The training is long and rigorous, and not easy to qualify for in itself. It has to be this way, because of the exceptional nature of the job itself. Often, there are only seconds to make critical choices which can decide the very future of a patient. The role involves stabilizing the patient as quickly as possible removing as much of the immediate danger as is humanly possible. Once this has been done, the patient can be transferred to another area for more long term treatment.
The trauma surgeon is actually less of a specialist, in many ways, than most of the other operatives in an emergency room. This is because they deal with many different parts of the body, and many different causes of illness or injury. They will deal with injuries and illness to the neck, to virtually all of the torso, and to the limbs as well. They will not deal with damage to the central nervous system. Most emergency operatives have a far more limited scope of operation.
Be aware that if you want to train to become a trauma surgeon, the work will be long and hard. This is definitely not a career you can even think about entering unless you are completely dedicated, and sure that you will be able to cope with the course and complete it. If you are a mature student, you will also need to give thought to how you will be able to support yourself while you are studying. It is also important to consider where you want to live in the future, as the vast majority of jobs will be in major metropolitan areas.
At the very start, you will need to be able to commit to a learning period of at least a year, more usually two years. Only after this will you have the necessary qualification and be able to apply for positions. Once you have a qualification in Surgical Critical Care, you should have little difficulty acquiring a position as there are so many to be had. This is hard, demanding work, and there are simply not enough qualified people to fill all of the positions.
There are now courses available in all branches of emergency care which operate partly online. Obviously, when you are training as any type of surgeon you are going to need a lot of hands on practical instruction, but there are still large parts of the theory course which can be taken online. This should be a great help to you in fitting your learning around current commitments. Remember, there is a shortage of qualified personnel, so the industry has a great incentive to help you qualify as a trauma surgeon.
