How To Break Into A Career In Emergency Medicine
Emergency medicine is one of the most vital of all parts of the medical establishment, yet it has only been regarded as a separate discipline for a relatively short period of time. Only in the last forty years or so has the emergency practitioner emerged as an important figure in their own right. Prior to this, emergency procedures were shared amongst qualified people from other disciplines. In many other parts of the world, emergency medical care is still more a part of the integrated whole than a separate discipline.
If you choose to work in emergency medicine, you will spend your working life in a constant state of pressure, and it takes a certain kind of person to be able to cope with this. If you feel you are the right type, the rewards can make up for this. You will literally be saving lives almost as a matter of routine. Of course, it is important to realize that a lot of the people who come to you for aid will not in fact survive, and that is the hardest part to deal with. Although everyone who does this job feels incredibly sad when the inevitable happens, it is a part of the job you have to learn to cope with.
Medical training is, of course, something which needs to take place in formal surroundings, and be carried out through the official system. There is no place in this profession for the self-taught or the amateur. As well as having a deeply caring nature, you will need to be the sort of person who can adapt to the intensive learning conditions of medical college. The ability to concentrate hard and pass academic exams will be absolutely necessary.
Emergency medical training also offers you the chance to specialize still further once you have gained your basic qualification. There are branches of the discipline which involve working with people in specialist situations, such as medical toxicology where you will be dealing with a great many people who have attempted suicide as well as those poisoned through accident. There are also opportunities to work with sports medicine and underwater emergencies.
Those choices can be made at a later stage. For now, the priority is to decide once and for all that you want to work in emergency medicine. You will need to take a college course, but the opportunities to do this are far greater than they have ever been before. You no longer need to give up your present job or move away from where you live. All of the best colleges in the country offer home learning courses, and there are many specialist colleges as well. If you need to fit your studies in with your busy life, this will be your best way of studying emergency medicine.
