How To Make Your Own Earthquake Emergency Kits

Earthquakes are natural occurrences that are rather difficult to predict and can strike anywhere at any time. While you cannot really do anything about trying to avoid getting hit by an earthquake, you can do something about being prepared for one. What you can do is to make eartquake emergency kits for yourself and the members of your family.

What are earthquake emergency kits? These are basically a group of items you can put together to help you and your loved ones survive should an earthquake hit and basic services like running water, heat, telephones and food outlets are affected. You will need to put together in a watertight container items that you will need to survive such an occurrence for at least three days. Some of the things that you should include in your earthquake emergency kits are one gallon of water per day for each person, ready to eat food that requires little to no water to prepare, basic cooking supplies and a can opener.

Your earthquake emergency kits should also have feeding utensils and supplies, copies of important documents you and your family might need to have on hand, extra clothes for warmth and rain gear, work gloves, personal hygiene items like soap, hand sanitizer and toilet paper. You should also try to make sure that your kits have water purification products that you can easily use for making clean water with and one such easy to store example of this is unscented liquid bleach that can be added to water using a dropper. You should also make sure that your kits have first aid supplies in them and basic tools needed for moving or repairing things like crowbars, hammers, wrenches and even ropes.

One of the components that you should not forget when you put together these kits is something that is called a “go-bag.” The items that are to be included in a go-bag are items that you will need should evacuation be deemed necessary. These items should be placed in an easy to carry container like a backpack or a small duffel bag and each member of the family should have one. Included in the items that you should have in a go bag include a flashlight, battery operated radio, extra batteries, a whistle, a pocket knife, a dust mask, a small amount of cash and coins, clothes that include sturdy shoes and warm headgear, a map and some water and a little bit of food.
